Nowadays in China, tipping becomes a quite common thing, people in the service industry get low base salary, they depend on tipping, not only the guide and driver, but also the luggage truck driver (luggage from the airport to the hotel and vise versa), and seems it is hard to make the trip smooth without tipping. It is suggested to give, per person, $4 per day for local guide, $3 for driver, $5 for national guide and $1p/luggage for luggage handling.
Tips to restaurant and hotel dining rooms waiters are not expected. Chambermaids should also be tipped when appropriate and are not included and are the same as going on any trip worldwide. If you are in a hotel bar, tipping is customary.
